Editing

After finishing filming we began editing .We spent a total of about 25 hours editing my music video this was all done over a period of 5 weeks.

I used final cut pro to put together my video . Then I used Adobe after effects and Photoshop CS5 to sort out my last few final adjustments. These are all programs used in professional movie businesses.

We then began to assemble it. We initially wanted to follow the story board but after the filming I decided against . We started afresh and began by laying down a basic idea of arrangement of shots we wanted to use.We started with the band performing , and then made sure the singer was in sync with the song. This produced our rough cut.The rought cut is only a basic idea that you keep building to . And we knew that it was far from completed. After showing it to Luke ,he suggested that there was various changes that needed to be made and of course more content. I began laying down the narrative ontop of the performance . Then I started to add more content of shots of driving through London, the band aboard the tour bus . We wanted the video to flow all the time. We did this by cutting to the beat ,and giving it short , sharp and punchy shots to make it fit with the genre of the music. After we showed him again he told us the story wasn’t as clear as it could be . Finally after fixing the main narrative so it made logical sense we were done and this completed our fine cut.

One edit that seemed to work really well was the performance elemet. Both the singing and performance I think the cast really fitted with the choice of song. We tried to keep our cast dressed as 70’s as we could , yet we wanted to achieve the idea of edginess. The stars seemed to look as if they knew the song and what they were playing .Another example that we belive didn’t work so well was the party scenes. The reason is it didn’t look real , the actors we used over reacted and though tried to appear drunk they acted almost ‘to drunk’.

During the editing we did all we could with the clips and overall I am quite happy with the final outcome. Yet there are a few changes that I would of liked to make , this is mostly based about the drummer. We had a drummer all ready and willing to play but due to family problems he had to pull out. The reason this hinderd us so much was it was the day before .This gave our replacment just under a day to learn the sing perfectly , an inhumane task. He tried his hardest and I think that he worked really well apart from going out of time occasionally or missing a fill it did not effect the video

Blog of the Shoot Day

When we first arrived we started running through the song with the band to let them re-familiarise them selves with it. Then once we were happy with the band playing in time and the actual arrangement of how they were set out, we began to start the actual filming process. We filmed the performance side to begin with . We started with wide shots then mid , close ups , extreme and then a few experimental shots we hadn’t planned but agreed would work well. The next thing we filmed was the photo shoot of the band ,then the groupies. We started by filming them pretending to do a photo shoot with various band members. When we were satisfied with all the work in the studio we packed up and started to make our way towards London in a school minibus. The Idea here was to re-create the idea of a band on tour aboard their tour bus. We set up a camera on a tripod and tried to film the band as they listend to music , slept , gazed dreamingly out of the window. When we got closer to main London we filmed traffic and the bus passing by lit up shop windows. We finally got to Shepards bush and walked over the road and filmed the small crowd gathering outside with the bands name and venue atop . This was to simulate the idea that it was ‘our’ band that the audience were planning to see. Not fully appreciative of the shots we had we made our way to Hammersmith , we filmed the Apollo and various band members walking past it and even pretending to go into it.

The roles we gave each other in our groups were assigned by what we thought each other was the main specialist at . I decided my colleague was best suited for that of a Director since he had the experience of being an actor so he knew how to command people efficiently , another factor was that it was his idea so he would be mentally best equipped to sort out how he wanted everything to look and play out on the shoot. I was given the role of being the camera man since I had been filming projects for school for the year I’ve been at school . We also decided that I should take charge of editing as I had come to grips with the basic use of final cut and was starting to truly understand how to edit videos. I was a musician aswell which enabled me to have a good sense of rhythm which was important for post editing to enable you to follow the theory of Negus , cutting to the beat.

The actual set was based on an urban backdrop against an old factory boarded up with corrugated iron . We wanted to give as realistic as possible feel of an abandoned street , extensively littered and give it a grimy feel . The band were seen to be quite an edgy rock band and the song is based on the idea of taking drugs so we decided this would work well . We made the set as basic and as simple as possible to emulate realism .

In the video we used a JCV500 Camera. This is HD so we can film as high resolution as possible. The new format of it being on an card and not a tape means everytime you start and stop recording it creates a new clip which makes it easier to work witrh in post production . Another new feature to these HD cameras are that they have a slow-motion mode which make it really easy to create perfectly timed and good looking shots.

Our first major problem we encountered as a group was losing a key member of our group he was by far the finest cameraman and editor out of the three of us . But unfortunately he left the school due to unforeseen circumstances. This really affected us since when we started the group we assigned each other to deal with issues of the day and other key things needed for the day . One of Ross’s jobs was to order 50 posters to paste behind the band to highlight the fact they were playing on the street and not a studio. Much to our happiness we found that it didn’t look as bad as we imagined it to be .

Another problem we faced was many people we cast dropped out the week before after much worry and anxiousness we sorted out a new cast but it wasn’t to a few days before the shoot day the drummer found that he had other commitments. Shocked we decided the best idea would to have me replace him , yet this would only leave Ben in charge on the day and even though he shined as a director he unfortunatly didn’t as a camera man . I asked as many drummers as I could . After many negative responses I asked a close friend and he agreed to step in a day before the shoot . I coached and pushed him as well as I could that evening and I think the results payed off as he put his best effort into it on the day and it really showed in post editing when I was able to pluck out a clip of a drum fill performed perfectly.

As we were travelling up to London we encountered many problems while filming. We had to try and set up a tripod in a space between the seats so we could get a clear view of each band member yet still retain a still as possible clip without it seeming to shaky. As I moved futher down the bus I had to mount the camera atop my shoulder to try and film people acting natural . Many shot I filmed were people really sleeping so this looked very real. As we approached our destination we parked right next to the venue ’02 Empire Shepherds Bush’ .A sign said right next to it , NO PARKING . We needed to be as close as possible to simulate the band getting off the bus and going back stage to their show. It was heavily raining which meant it was hard to get a clear shot of the venue.

Most of the clips we filmed in London , while being on bus and off it all worked really well . Our main intention was to give the pop video a documentary element. This was the band in what is seen to be a tour bus , travelling from gig to gig . In a sense ’Life on the Road’. The composition of actual shot mainly showed one band member at a time either sleeping , listening to music , and some completely bored. We thought these shots might not work since they might look too natural and just look like someone filming everyday bands . But with the music playing a nice montage of these are used to great effect.

One shot that really worked the best was the close up of the singer .This was mainly because he looked the most convincing person in the band through attitude , he knew the song the most and looks. Lip synching was easy since our singer knew most , nesrly all of the words . He also had the most charisma.

The shots that we filmed mainly did work but of course we had some shots that really did not . one particular one that didn’t was the scene of our band having an after party. This was based around on the idea of the groupies actually looking quite slutty and messed up . We wanted the party to seem wild yet realistic something I felt we did not achieve , the shots look to over acted . To me it looks as if a group of teenagers messing around in the back of a studio with fake alcohol ,and pretending to be really drunk by ‘trying ‘ to really wild . Unfortunaltley I had to use a shot but if you only see it as a very short clip then it doesn’t look as bad as it potentially could.

I think that the shoot turned out a lot better than I initially expected. When I first saw the set I didn’t like it but once we setup the band and had the music playing and cameras rolling I became reassured that it might work. The band looked quite realistic , this was my main worry as we had just replaced them and even the recent change of drummer worked . Not perfectly but again better than I though he would. The London scenes turned out exactly as I expected which was great to see . Overall I believe that despite all the problems we encountered as a group on the day we managed to work around and the video was done to the best of our abilitys.

Words Of The Song

I always flirt with death
I look ill, but I don't care about it
I can't face your dress
And stand up straight and tall and shout about it

I think I'm on another world with you (with you)
I'm on another planet with you (with you)

You always get under my skin
I don't find it irritating
You always play to win
I don't need rehabilitating

I think I'm on another world with you (with you)
I'm on another planet with you (with you)

Another girl, another planet
Another girl, another planet

Space travel's in my blood
And there ain't nothing I can do about it
Long journeys wear me out but
Oh God you know we won't live without it

I think I'm on another world with you (with you)
I'm on another planet with you (with you)

I think I'm on another world with you (with you)
I'm on another planet with you (with you)

Another girl is loving you now
Another planet, forever holding you down
Another planet

Set Build And Lighting Design

Our original idea was to film in a backstreet in a grimey looking place , we decided this idea would not have worked as we wouldnt be able to control our lighting as efficiently and as we actually needed it for the day of the shoot. We decided it would be easier and would work well with both the pracatalities and visual display been in a studio atmosphere , giving us more room to expriment and sucessfully light our scene.
We would be able to build a set to the highest degree of realism as we could physically possible .The idea for our setup in what was meant to resemble the outside of an old abandoned building (prefably a Factory) would to have brick walls surround our band with a backdrop of corrugated iron this gives the scene a very urban feel , we would have grafitti and quite a rubbish laden floor to give the impression of quite a grimey and dirty place. The problems we faced were mainly how we were going to light our band. We decided we'd use a blue tinted light to give the band quite a cold feel , then it would turn to red to give the band a more edgier feel
The main problem we faced at first with our cast is many of them failed to tell us that they were unavailable to actually perform on the day .This lead to great aggrivation in the group and
(we eventually overcame this with other actors but our main and still outraging concern was that the new actors do not look the part .
The first idea we had for the scene of the band being back stage with their groupies celebrating their show.

Design Plans

We drew out a plan so we were able to successfully determine where each of our actors where , the camera position and how we would light them . This would help us minimise confusion on the day of the shoot and make as simple as possible for us .

The Lighting Plan

We wanted to have quite a harsh blue and white light that flooded our stars as they played in the studio . This idea is meant to make the scene seem dark , edgy and and cold feeling throughout the set.

The lighting plan means that you know where the lights will be positioned ,the colour rthat will be used an how the singer and members of the grup will be lit to best effect. Using the plan we also we also went back to our storyboards and filled in more details about lighting.

With the studio design plan and the lighting plan and the storyboard we had a good idea of exactly of what were going to on the day of the shoot . We have a plan , and with my group the toxic trio we need all the help we can get .

I found this site called Keithtucker.com which is all about set design and the drawings he has done .

Camera Test

Our aim was to look for people who wear across between boheniam and indie fashion.
This is almost the style of Mod clothing , which is about skninny jeans , baggy shirts , general messiness of the hair and big shoes , usually high ankle boots. As well as tyring to find people who fitted the part ,we also needed to try and find people who would be easy to direct ,follow orders and not be afraid to go for it on the day so they would actually look the part .

Storyboards

The storyboards are used to build on the time line , by helping you get a clearer visual by a rough sketch of what is happening in the shot and what it will end up looking like . The type of shot is detailed and explained thoroughly. We again can see if the timeline will work with help of actual drawings . The story board is the plan that you shoot to , so if it works on paper that make it alot less expensive to do than to waste time filming for hours not days. The storyboard works out the type of shot , the angle , the camera movement , the colours and shapes , the mise en scene and how the picture composition rules will be applied in the film .etc.
Everything and anything is thought about in the stroy board so that no time is wasted on the shoot . We have only 1 day to shoot so we need to have everything ready

There is a mid shot of a guitarist in the story boards since is when the guitarist is playing his solo and in order to highlight this and draw focus to him . We wanted a mid shot and not a close up to show that he was actually playing the guitar.

On page 6 one of the examples of my tracking shots is when we film the band drinking with some girls in the changing room . This a mid shot and would probably filmed using a handheld camera since we wanted to walk down down the line of people in the row . This will hopefully make the scene more intimate . For shooting to edit we are planning to zoom on shot 26 which will give us the close up of the guitarists hand in shot 27 . This will make these two particularly easy shots to cut and edit later on .

Timeline

The time line is used to try and link the music and the lyrics to what is happening in the music video . We can see how long the shot is going to be on screen for and what the actual shot is .

This helps us to know that when we actually film we know the exact amount of time we should film for , and in the actual post editing it will help us cut to the beat to the music and make sure our shots actually will work in our pop video.

We then filmed all the story boards for ten seconds and cut it in Final Cut Pro to the song.

From doing this we can see how efficent this will work in terms of designing our storyboards and the eventual outcome of the pop video itself.

For example when the singer is singing so naturally we will have a close up of the singers face , which will most likely focus on his lips .This may shot at a low angle to give the lead singer some sort of authority and a sense of 'cockiness' towards his audience since we are trying to give the image of our band being edgy and rebellious.

Another example is when we hear the band playing we will have a wide shot the band which will show the whole band performing . This will start with the close up of the singers face and wiull slowly track out to the whole band which which be an establishing shot and will show the band playing outside an abandoned factory with corragated iron in the background.

Introduction To the Music Industry

Music taste can be a controversial topic –almost to the point of tribalism. Everyone has their own opinion and taste of various music, and it is hard to sway their views or try and convert them to listening to your favourite genre of music. Music is not just what you listen to it can affect all the aspects about you. Your personality, the way you dress, the way we speak and sometimes even the way we act. The main example of this is when a music company creates a star or a band that is destined for fame then they don’t want the star or band to be a one hit wonder. In fact the complete opposite they want to be able to market this band as long as possible this can be up to 20 - 30 years and sometimes even longer. It is more than the actual music to them; it mainly matters about how they’ve created a business like element from this band, a product of money. They start to produce t-shirts with the bands logo and faces on. This then starts to branch out to cups, wristbands, pillows, curtains .Any item that can have a design on it will be sought after by the company. The music company does this so that their star product can be known worldwide and achieve global stardom.

Some times the dynamic tension that exists between the artistic and commercial forces underpins the success of this vast media business. This may be due to thecae that sometimes that that the band as a whole does not work well together, whether it be their talent or other reasons. The only good act in the band may break away from the band and aim to try and launch a solo career. An example of this is Bruce Springsteen realising his full potential as a musician and going solo. Yet there is also this dynamic tension between bands and record companies, the tension between organic and synthetic music. Organic music is all about being natural and making music for the soul purpose of making music, the band write their own songs and make the music they want, this also means they earn 100 % of profit. This can also be considered real music as it is made by the band not a business tycoon music producer. Synthetic music is Factory based, manufactured pop bands, written for the band by the producers of usually big multimedia companies. This is usually a group of good looking girl or boys, created for the one and only reason to please mainstream audiences and make commercial record companies a lot of profit.

The pop video is only one strand of a multimedia campaign. Television, radio, newspaper and magazines also fall into this category as this is a great way to get music out world wide. With such a wide range of choices the pop video can be shown and displayed all over the media. For the example the single can be easily broadcasted on the radio while the actual music video can be shown on television, with the band being interviewed in a music magazine. 3 trans-national corporations dominate the music industry. Universal, Sony/BMG and Midmost are major companies which own a line of smaller companies. www.universalstudios.com

This is done so companies can have many various genres of music to reach different kinds of audiences a. These are called Major independents. Next there a record company that has little or no financial connections to the major ones. These are known as independent companies or ‘Indie’ companies.

The purpose of creating a music video is usually in order to promote a single or an album. A video being released is much more entertaining as it engages the audience more with the song , and from watching a video the audience can see what the real meanings of the song are. This also makes it easier to distribute on other kinds of media platforms such as TV , Advertising and internet , including youtube , my space and other social networking sites.

Trying to get your music video out to the public may be one of the hardest problems you can face but even once the video has been sent to the public whether its shown on various tv channels, or broadcasted on youtube there will still be problems facing it. The pop video is frequently is becoming less cared about and irrelevant to fans. At the rate of which modern society is downloading illegal music of the internet, more people are beginning to get more and more of their songs for free. This also has a knock on effect as when someone downloads a song by illegal means they then share it with a friend and the friend copies it over to his and the process repeats. This means that record sales are going down in their thousands. Music television is becoming more increasingly popular like shows like MTV , Kerrang and VH1 .Aswell as well as MTV just showing music videos it also airs new reality shows dealing with rich and annoying teenagers . The music videos that are mostly shown now are the more mainstream based ones , the idea is the more money the artist or the music company pays to the music tv shows , the more likely and often there video will shown per day.

Composition Rules

Film making is a language which uses various parts of film grammar to communicate the meaning that the director wants in pop videos and movies . The picture composition rules are this grammar . I explain with some of the key ones below.

1) Different types of Shot size

Different types of shot convey different types of meaning.

Extreme close up (ECU this shot is meant to be emotive and filled with detail. Forexample it could to show a smile on an actors face to show an emotive repsone of how the charcter is feeling.

Close up (CU)this shot shows a small bit of the scence yet its main emphasis is on the charcters whole face .

Mid shot (MS)this is where your able to see most of the actor .A good example of this is seeing things that the actor with his hands , giving something to someone or just a simple hand gesture.

Wide Shot (WS)this shot allows you to see the entire actor and most of his surroundings for example sitting an old man sitting on a park bench with a small sycamore tree behind him in shot

Extreme wide shot (EWS) this shot can shows where the film is being set , being either a long landscape shot or just a shot of a town

2) Camera Position and angle (up shot, down shot)

If the camera shoots the actor at his/her ‘eye level’ then this is usually to display factual information

If the camera is shot at a higher angle the camera looks down at a character then this suggests that the main character is humble and we as an an audience feel a sort of power or authority over the character

If the camera is shot at a low angle this gives a sense of authority to the actor . This could also be used to juxtopose the charcter to be of an arrogant nature .

(3) Camera Movements

Crane shots are used to give an aethestic pleasure to the scene. As it is a camera attached to a long pole that can lift up and down , side to side . which ghives a whole new element of movement to a camera.

Zoom. We use zoom to move from a long shit to a closer one very quickly . The subject size is increased and the viewers attention is drawn to whatever the camera zoomed on for example a fight scene zooms into a hand clutching a knife. Following pan. Zooming out how ever could be used as an establishing shot to show the viewer where the subject is.

Tracking (dollying). Tracking involves the camera actually being moved closer or futher away from the subject . It gives a smoother feel to zoom and looks more ‘professional’ lines are put down on the ground to make this operation easier. A camera tracking to a particular scence can make it intimate and emotiona;

Hand-held camera. A hand-held camera can produce a jerky, bouncy, unsteady images . This used for POV shots sometimes or to feel close to the charater as your basically ‘walking’ with him .

4) Lighting

Soft and harsh lighting. Soft and harsh lighting can manipulate a viewer's attitude towards a setting or a character. The way light is used can make objects, people and environments look beautiful or ugly, soft or harsh, artificial or real. Light may be used expressively or realistically.

Backlighting. A romantic heroine is often backlit to create a halo effect on her hair.

If the main protagnist is sitting in a room you would have 3 lights to light him properly.

1) The spot this used to light the subject , the main aim of this is to flood the subject in a pool of light

2) 32 * anticlockwise to this you would have the Fill light. This is used to create shadows and give the person some depth.

3) The actor will still look like a cardboard cutout so we then have to use another light directly behind him which gives the person a 3D sense to him .

Light is mainly used to change the emotion and mood of an scene. Soft lighting can make the scene beautiful and romantic .Harsh lighting can make an actors face look horrible and ugly and the scene dark , dismall and even provoke fear.

5) Rule of Thirds

This used to make a scence visually pleasing .If you look at the diagram there are 4 different hot spots and a head or the main subject content in that spot will look great . But you can subvert this idea by breaking the rule and placing the main content in different spots to the the 4 main hot spots.

6) Leading the eye

This can be done to make the viewer look for what is the subject content . It gives the picture a pleasure to look at . For example there could be a extreme long shot of a desert , barren area , with a long and twisting path cut deep into the sand with a small cabin at the bottom of it

FIRST PITCH

As Keith Nugus explains about how for a film to work it need the convetions , they are listed below.

· The explicit and unashamed promotion of the artist’s “image” (aesthetic/generic/ideological) as a specific product with a brand identity, ready for mass consumption

· The featuring of the artist (almost without exception)

· A wide and extensive use of shot types, camera angles and movement

· Repetition of reoccuring thematic elements and generically specific iconography (one key element often being dominant and providing the skeletal structure for the promo)

· A possible narrative structure

· A possible performance element

· The flexibility to disregard Realism!

· Shots cut tightly to the beat of the track

· Use of special effects (lighting, annimation, CGIs, in-camera effects)

· A carefully constructed Mise en Scene appropriate to the content and tone of the track

· High impact instantly! (Don’t forget that competition for airplay on the main music channel outlets is intense)

Today we pitched our idea to Luke .We picked the song ‘another girl another planet’ by the Only ones. This a song from the late 70’s . We talked about the location we should film our music video . For the performance side we though about driving down to Camden that day and filming the badn playing in an abandoned alley way with the majority of the wall covered with old posters. Luke highly advised against this and instead decided that we should try to simulate this to the highest degree of realism that was possible in the studio. We thought about the narrative location of our video . We all though of the idea about having the band getting drunk with themselves and after with their groupies in the dressing room . This shows the having fun side to the song which the song is mainly based upon .

Research and Development

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT FIRST IDEAS

My group , known as the dream team , will work through the five stages of production. We began by researching pop videos and there conventions and how the industry works.

I looked at the pop video singer Kylie Mynouge and found that she coveys the idea of sex appeal . She achieves this by showing off particular body parts so that she can attract the audience without giving to much of her self away .

I developed three ideas to pitch to my group .

My first sing is Black stone Cherry : Lonely Train

It is about a man whos looking for his old brother . He is riding across the desert and there is there is a rolling cloudy background . As he rides along . The song is about how theres a train which is society , and if youyr not on it then you are not accepted and are lonely. The Performance side would be the band riding atop a big pickup truck through the desert .The narrative would be about the fight that is going on through out the whole video.

Chris Brown : Transform ya

I would mostly base this video on the dance element . I would have all my dancers dressed in black , holding white masks to their faces. The performance side would be the singer ‘Chris Brown’ doing some solo dancing and rapping , and the female singer would feature in some of the video . I would have it so you could just see the outlines of the dancers and the white masks would almost be flouresent . On the black hoodies I would also have lines from the hands to the feet which act like glow sticks which are light blue. There wouldn’t be a story line as it would be concentrating on the dancers , but there would have to be an element of morphing , changing into something. Maybe clips of the movie transformers.

The Five Stages Of Production

1.) Research and Development

For research we are going to do a poll to see whether male or female like this song more. The target audience for my media product would be the mainstream audience of teens aged between 14-19. There would also be a market for the older generation . This is a mostly a song aimed at a male audience . In its time the song was aimed at people who just wanted to have fun drinking and getting high . We are going to make a line by line time line , then a whole pop video treatment covering everything we need for the shoot. . We need to explore the possibilities of doing the actual idea of the film and to see whether it is actually acheivable. We then need to do a storyboard about what exact shots and sequences we want in time with the music. Then a cast is picked and to make sure that the actor will fit in the video. We need to use a camera test to determine this.

2) Pre production

In pre production everything is got ready . The final product is a call sheet which carries all the information that is vital on the day of the shoot. So during this stage we prepare the casting , the costumes , the locations , the make up , the props and anything and everything else before the day of the shoot.

3) Production

This is the day of the shoot . This is when everything is filmed all though there may be pick ups later if they are needed.

4) Post Production

This is editing and after effect and can take up to a year on big movies.

5) Distribution and exhibition

This is the stage when movies are somd to television or placed in cinemas

The Brief

You have to create:
- THREE MULTI MEDIA PRODUCTS
- TO ESTABLISH THE IMAGE AND BRAND OF YOUR SINGER AND GROUP and
- HELP SELL THE SONG FROM THEIR FIRST ALBUM.

Evaluation of Post production

On our preliminary task the shots we used were simple. There was a list of shots we had to use in the task, which were shown in the storyboard . Once we had filmed these we then experimented with some of our own shots to make it more intresting , when we came to cut it we had a lot more shots to play with , and we looked through them we decided which ones worked better. The editing of our final product seemed complicated at first but once we learnt how to use final cut it seemed a lot simpilar. On the day of the prelim task we didn't record any sound. This meant when we had finished editing we had to overdub it by re-recording in the studio. When we started editing wanted to use close ups in our beginning shots. This was to create a sense of confusion as close ups don’t show much , and this would make the audience think in their mind "Whats going on ?"
In our thriller we started the movie quite similar to our Prelim an extreme close up on our protagonists eye since this confuses the audience and makes them wonder where he is . Originally we decided when he discovered the bodies was to cut back and forth from the bodies to a reaction shot but it didn’t work as it looked wrong and badly edited . The film is only 2 minutes long, this meant that if we were trying to build suspense we needed to start of slow and build it up to a climax. In order to this we had a shot which slowly zoomed in and then when it stopped there was a loud bang . The POV shots we used let us see exactly what our protagonist sees which stimulates the horror even futher as he shines his torch over the heap of corpses piled against the wall .On the day of the Thriller shoot we recorded many sounds, A light switching on and off, a glass breaking, a table falling over, a torch rolling and items falling off the tabel and metal poles hitting the floor. The film doesn’t feature any music, this makes the protagonist seem alone .Only the ambient sounds we added using Soundtrack pro. When the final shot blacks out and the title appears, there is a loud bang. This creates a sense of fear, and was intended to be the last climax of the film. Before the sequence starts, we introduce the production company 'Redrum'. It is a ficticious company that we used since it was taken from the shining and Redrum backwards spells out murder. This keeps in with the horror genre . It comes in on a black background for a few seconds before it fades away to say the name of the director. The title of the film however comes in after the sequence ends and is in capitals to seem more important. We didn't put any titles in the sequence itself to keep the tension and suspense high , since we had titles the whole way through but this lost all sense of horror and it didn’t make it as chilling as we intended it to be .The lack of sound in our movie creates an sense of emptiness and in a lot of horror movies just before the scariest bit everything goes quiet. In our horror film the choices we made were used to lure horror fans to watch it , since we all like Horror our selves this was easy to do so .The choices we made were intended to make our film as frightening as possible which is the ultimate goal of any good horror movie .

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

1) The main task was much harder than I originally thought . We had to make a folder and organise it with different sections about sounds , non diagetic , diagetic. Cast list , Storyboards , Synopsis . This took about 3 weeks to prepare and ontop of this we had to work out a sutible location for where to film . It was much more complicated as we had to think of the idea of what our movie would be , and the prelimenery task we had drawn out and ready to film .All that was left down to us was the actual filming and directing and of course the mise-en set

2)Originally I liked the idea of doing storyboards , and we started to do them I really loved it . You can tell a story so much easier with pictures than words and it alot easy to potray an idea to someone else visually without dialog.

3)I think my skills in all fortays whether its directed , cameraman or editing have improved . As even when we cut together our Preliminary and it was completely finished I was really disappointed with it . But my Thriller was alot better , as it had what my other had lacked . We had more camera shots to play around with which were more intresting and better . Since there more different styles like closeups for example the opening scene with the extreme close up of our main protagonists eye

4)In our Preliminary task we used the sound that we had only recorded on the actual day . But we had a slight problem with the lip synching so we decided to overdub the sound by recording it in the studio after wer had cut the film together. For our main task we used lots of different sound effects to capture the different ambience sounds in the movie which for this was air conditioning a faint hissing throughout the whole thing . We also had additional clips to build supspense leading with a loud crash to scare the audience . The other thing that we had in our Thriller and not the preliminary was the various sound effects that we used.

5) We had more shots in our Main task so obvouisly our use of final cut was going to show a better use of ability . We didnt add any after effects to our piece . We did have slow motion , scaling up of the video and an intense over exposure to simulate a blowing bulb

Who are the target audience?

Any class could see this as it could relate to anyone as if your working class or if your upper class as horror targets a main stream audience , since most people rich or poor love being thrilled and scared. The main target audience for horror film in general is the 15-24 year old market . A saecondary audience would be older horror fans of 25 + Our film is most likely to be aimed at teenagers of the age of 15 to 24 year olds this beacuse who we have in our film is in the age range of 16 -18.
This is because people who are into heavier music with lyrics about death and dying or angry agressive issues . Tradtionally more working or middle class older men prefer this kind of music they will be more fond of the thriller/horror genre as it fits there music taste and in some cases their sense of style aswell .This subculture fits in with the fashion of metal and goth which some influences come from horror films like vampires etc. example above is an Emo teenager.
Even 15 to 24 year olds fans don't have to look gothic or emo or dress differently . Normal looking teenagers can still like this kind of movie.

Whether it being the horror if they were kidnapped as a teen or if there child was taken away as an adult .It would be more likely for boys as not many girls are into the horror genre unless there with there boyfreinds. Our vilm through out has high tension . It is very chillintg the whole way through and jumpy . This is done by use of sound and clever camera work . The whole thing remains mysterious and it is left with a cliff hanger as the last scene is the apparent dead body waking up suddenly.

What kind of media instituation might distrbute your media product and why ?

Our Thriller has lots of blood and gore . We got inspiration from this from the very popular film Saw , Just like Saws storyline our main protagonist wakes up alone in abandoned room , with no idea how he got there he begins to plan his escape..

I looked at production company Lionsgate . It is a studio with a key presence in the production of films. They made Rambo and the bank job these have all made lots of profit with more than sex and gore a good storyline. A horror doesn’t have such a good effect if it focus’s on the plot and the characterization rather than creating a dramatic effect, appeals to larger audiences. Then I came across horror films made by Lionsgate , including My bloody valetine and the Saw franchise this showed me that they had links to the horror industry and was experienced in this particular genre . I found more specific information about Lionsgate such as a they have a sister company ,20th television . This has control over most of the american televison channels mostly appealing to a male audience . They also own FX in the UK .This is aimed towards men and the programs it airs are ‘True Blood’ a horror that focus on appealing to the mass audience by including copius amount of gore and ‘Dexter’ which is about a policeman who murders the crooks the cops cant catch . This would be a brilliant way to advertise my film on this channel . Since Lionsgate own FX it would be easy to broadcast a trailer for my movie and we know that it will be shown to our target audience . Lionsgate also own their own TV guide network , a big cable network allowing us to make the distribution of our Thriller easier by releasing directly onto cable TV
What I have found from researching is films on Cable TV especially on low budget films has become one of the most profitable aspects. Lionsgate seemed to be the perfect choice for our movie. I then found a website dedicated to horror films which reviews them and has many trailers . This confirmed that it was the right choice of production company for my thriller

How does your product represent particular social groups?

My film Mute is about teenagers who have been captured and literally piled up in a pitch black room waiting to die or even worse have the horrible torture waiting to come for them just to please one sick minded and mentally disturbed man. Teenagers in my film are represented to be weak willed and helpless. Other films that employ this tactic are basically any other kind of horror, but usually the American films. Just like capture and torture films like ‘Saw’ the adults usually make it out alive since they have more wit and life experience than the younger generation. This fits in with Saw as there is just one man trying to escape after been drugged and kidnapped from his home, you don’t find out the reason but later on in the film everything becomes clear as to why he was put here and he starts put together the clues he realises the horrible truth that he is actually the mastermind behind this whole scheme of things. This movie is not intended to be aimed at a audience younger than 15 as it is very jumpy and features a lot of blood and gore .This movie connects with teenagers since it is a thriller/horror and this is the particular genre of movie an average teenager will go to see and since all the cast are teenagers it works even better. This wouldn’t connect as well to Adults since most don’t go for horrors, they like the high concept action movies like the Mission Impossible franchise.

Young people are often represented as chav’s and hoodies and the fact that a certain group of hoodies were banned in shopping centre Bluewater just outside for wearing hoods .The representation in the press is about them being vandals and hooligens who prey on the older generation robbing , mugging and beating up people for fun . People are scared by a group of hoodies hanging around they feel imtimitated. Our film represents teenagers in a very different way. This man who captured all these teenagers and taken them hostage in this room. He has a strong hatred for teenagers as a social group as they are seen as vandals and have no feelings for the older generation or anyone else except them selves. Maybe he has been mugged and assaulted often and has had enough of the hoodies taking advantage of him and his age. But our film makes teenagers seem like weak and subservient people as they are all tied up and gagged and this renders them useless to themselves as they have no chance of escaping. This shows teenagers in the light of a victim, making them the prey and no longer the predator hunting down easy targets on the street.

In What Ways Does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products

We arranged our title sequence to look like something from LOST
This beacuse it is a horror mopvie and we wanted to get the same effect of the title sequence from the film we copied as to our film we actually made. This beacuse it fades in and out at the beggining then repeats at the end
We began our movie with REDRUM productions

This is beacuse we wanted people to know as soon as they saw this name that it was murder backwards which the idea came from the Shining , people would realise it was a film in the genre of horror straight away. Redrum also seemed a sutible name since it was a group beffort making the film it wasnt fair to put one single persons name. The reason we only used this and our end title is because we wanted to create and keep tension high throughout the entire movie . This is different to most movies since they usually all feature Director , Producer , Editor , Actors

The very first shot of our film is Rory. This conforms a typical hollywood horror movie, by introducing the main character in the opening scene.

It is an extreme closeup of his eye .It is in a pitch black room so we can only just make out his eye as the sunlight creeps in through the boarded windows.Since it is so zoomed in and just focused on this worried looking eye this creates a sense of confusement , the audience dont realise whats going on until Rory actually gets up from his bed. This shot was influenced from the very popular movie SAW since in all the movies it starts with the victim waking up , disorentated and to no clue where they are.

When our protagonist actually awakens he jumps up against a wall ,panicked he begins to survey his surroundings he sees a window . This is a mid shot so we get a more clearer picture of how beaten up , battered and brusied our main protagonist actually is .He then hears a noise , this noise and general idea we got from the film the Blair witch project and it worked in our favour , It kept our viewers on the egde until something scares him so much he falls throught he door.

As he falls into the next room we used a tracking shot which cuts through the wall and door . He then is plunged into pitch blackness with not even a slither of sunlight able to light his way. He finds a torch on the floor and turns it on. He then slowly starts to pan aorund himself to find out what actually is in this room . As he sines the torch we used a POV shot so we could give the impression what he sees.

We see a reaction shot of our main protagonist . This shot conveys the sense of horror our protagonist is feeling . The bloody handprint is seen in any typical horror and blood always shows that something bad is going to happen . And backed up with a reaction shot this confirms it.

This is the first shot of what Rory actually sees its a POV shot . A girls face with her eyes wide open , pale and blooded . A dead body is always something that is in a horror movie as horror movies always end or begin with dead bodies

The final shot of our film is our main protagonist approaching a dead body to examine it . This is similar to the film 'Seven' As the horror builds with the music and sounds until the titles show with a loud crash.

Our film title comes at the end after our main victim is awoken since this leaves the audience on a cliff hanger and they can only imagine what is going to happen next to our main protagonist . It fades in fast with a loud crash then quickly fades out again
